Steveie986: it's about gossiping-at-the-Wel-Farm-vegetable-section prestige
Steveie986: it's about the my-daughter-got-a-1550-and-your-daughter-got-a-1490 prestige
Steveie986:it's the product of a violent reaction to the twentieth century's social upheavals
Steveie986: but was in turn a reaction to centuries of rich CHinese literary, cultural, and artistic heritage
Steveie986: but which failed to give China technological equality with the West
Steveie986: and West screwed over the CHinese, so they learned they need technology and hard stuff rather than culture
Steveie986: so Chinese people emphasizing math and science is a twentieth-century phenomenon
Steveie986:before the 19th century the only Chinese intellectuals that existed were literary or artistic in nature
